in an earlier post, i discussed a certain equestrian prize list that i did a series of illustrations for. part of their compensation for these illustrations was the choice for a quarter, half, or full page black and white advertisement for this here lil’ studio of mine. being the greedy person that i am, i opted for the full page. a larger ad must mean more exposure, which in turn must mean a higher chance of getting hired to do some work, right? well, that’s my logic at least, but i will be the first to admit that i am one of the most illogical people i know.

i’d like to give a shout out THANKS A MILLION to Liz C. and Nacole B. for giving me such a great opportunity. i’m not entirely sure when the prize list will become available, but i’m under the impression it’s set to hit the printers in the next week or two.

i am currently in new york city (well, brooklyn to be exact). it is very hot here. it actually feels like summer here. my pale seattle body is not accustomed to such temperatures :: think high 80’s, possibly low 90’s and so muggy the air feels thick :: it feels fantastic and the city, as usual, has me swooning. lots of photographs being taken, pictures being drawn, and so forth.

i am catching the china town bus early saturday morning, am very stoked. heading to maine for a three day sailing trip. i hope my cameras and sketchbooks are ready for a whirlwind of activity..

why, hello there. i haven’t forgotten about the photographs i promised to post on wednesday. unfortunately, the amazing lab i have them printed at it is only open during limited business hours and not open on weekends (convenient, eh?). i really shouldn’t complain because they do extraordinary work. it’s just that when i drop my film off, i become excessively eager to pick up my photographs. it’s like christmas. or maybe even better than that. unfortunately, their hours did not align with my own hours (i picked up a couple extra shifts this week) and i will not be able to retrieve my photographs until monday. sigh. once again, i’ll go ahead and cry you a river, but i do thank you for your patience.

so, in the meantime, i’ve been quite busy. and by “quite busy” i mean really really super duper busy. i had all of these wonderful assignments fall onto my lap and most (no, wait, all) of them are time sensitive. as in, they are due this coming week. actually, i’m lying. two (or was it three?) were due last week and i received extensions because i was so swamped. this is a juggling act. the life of a freelancer is all about the ebbs and flows – and when it flows, i swear, the work pours in from every side and you most likely end up like me, awake most (if not all) of the night (mm, er, morning) between your day job(s) and ya know, the rest of your life, trying to keep up with the demand. do not confuse this for complaining. i am grateful to have the work, believe you me, it’s just that i’m a little bit tired. all nighters are like taking swift punches to the gut. they didn’t used to feel this way, but apparently at the age of 26 they really start to have a negative physical impact.. not to mention, my stamina is totally lacking.. i’m yawning. a true all nighter should be pulled without yawns, complaints, or serious changes in mood. so, forgive me if i seem a bit ‘off.’ lack of sleep does not do good things for me, apparently.

alright, alright. i’ll quit ranting and raving about the lack of photography and excessive workload and explain these illustrations. as if you didn’t know this already, i ride horses and have been riding for sixteen years. that said, i have made many a friend in the horse industry – one of them happens to be a wonderful gal by the name of Liz who assigned me the task of making some simple black and white illustrations to fill some gaps in the Menlo Charity Horse Show prize list (don’t know what a prize list is? google it. i will just be more of a rambling fool if i explain it here). it also happens to be their 40th Anniversary this year, so i was also given the opportunity to design the little banner for that. however, that is not going to be posted because as of yet it has not been approved by the powers that be. it was a fun assignment. it should go without saying that i enjoy drawing horses and anything horse related, but this was a particularly fun little gig and i am quite eager to see how they look once printed. i’ll give you the low down once i get my hands on a copy of the prize list.
